A Creative Getaway: Our Trip to the AAW International Woodturning Symposium
Every now and then, it's important to step away from the workshop, refill your creative cup, and surround yourself with people who share your passion. That's exactly what my husband, Ben, and I did when we traveled to Raleigh, North Carolina, for the 40th International American Association of Woodturners (AAW) Symposium.
The AAW Symposium is the largest woodturning event in the world, bringing together hobbyists, professional artists, collectors, educators, and vendors from around the globe. Over four incredible days, attendees have the opportunity to experience live demonstrations, hands-on learning, exhibitions, trade shows, and connect with some of the most talented artists in the industry. This year's symposium was held June 4 through June 7 at the Raleigh Convention Center and featured more than 80 demonstrations, panel discussions, galleries, and exhibitors from across the woodworking community.
One of the absolute highlights for me was learning how to make a natural edge "Roly Bowl." There is something so rewarding about learning directly from masters of the craft. No matter how long you've been creating, there's always another technique to discover or a new perspective to gain. Being able to sit, observe, ask questions, and then apply those lessons firsthand was truly inspiring.
Throughout the symposium, Ben and I met so many outstanding artists and makers. We spent hours exploring the incredible galleries filled with breathtaking wood art, visiting vendors, discovering new tools and materials, and, of course, bringing home some beautiful pieces of wood and a few treasures for future projects. The sense of community was one of my favorite parts. Everyone was eager to share their knowledge, encourage one another, and celebrate the artistry that makes woodworking so special.
The American Association of Woodturners was founded in 1986 with a mission to strengthen and empower the global woodturning community. Today, the organization supports thousands of members around the world through education, scholarships, local chapters, publications, and its annual symposium. Their vision is simple but meaningful: to create a world where woodturning is valued, inspirational, and accessible to everyone.
Beyond all of the learning and inspiration, this trip was also a wonderful getaway for just Ben and me. Sometimes life gets busy, and it's easy to put work first. This was a chance to slow down, spend quality time together, and enjoy a shared passion.
Of course, trips like this are only possible because of the incredible people back home who help care for our family. A huge thank you goes to our wonderful pet sitter, Quinn, for taking such great care of our home and our babies while we were away. As well as my manager Jessica Cogswell-Zampine who made our home shine inside and out and took extra great care of our furry babies! Knowing they were in excellent hands allowed us to fully enjoy the experience without worry.
We left North Carolina feeling inspired, energized, and excited to bring new ideas back into the workshop. One of my favorite things about woodworking is that there is always something new to learn, and this symposium reminded me why I love being part of this incredible community.
I'm looking forward to sharing more photos, stories, and project ideas from our trip in the coming days.
Until then, happy creating!
— Marilyn
